Tips for Pruning Your Trees Correctly

Now that winter is almost over, your trees are going to start waking up again.

Now that winter is almost over, your trees are going to start waking up again. So this means that you’ll need to spend some time pruning time. But the problem is, pruning your trees correctly depends on the frequency of your attention.

How Often Do You Trim and Prune?

All trees are different. Much like people, they will grow and develop at different speeds. What this means is you might have to trim a maple tree different than you would a bonsai tree. So while you can wait on some trees and pay closer attention to others, you should look to prune somewhere between every three years or every five. Depending on three, pruning every four years might just be what you need.

What’s the Difference?

The difference is mainly due to the condition of the tree. Weakened branches and limbs need to be trimmed before they threaten the tree’s overall health. Likewise, a brand new tree might still be establishing its root system. They haven’t quite gotten the branches they’ll have when they’re older just yet. When you have a younger tree, you shouldn’t wait as long to prune it. In fact, for trees that aren’t as developed, trimming or pruning them every two to three years is for the best. Although it’s easiest to prune during the winter, that doesn’t mean you can’t do it as spring begins to approach.

What About Oak Trees?

Oak trees, on the other hand, are a bit different. Pruning oak trees leaves them vulnerable to a disease called oak wilt. Pests that feast on the fresh cuts left behind by the pruning job mean your tree could become a cake. You’ll find oak wilt is most likely in April, and continues through the summer until fall comes. April to October is not the best time for this operation. If you have an oak, try to prune it anywhere between the beginning of November and the end of March.
