How to Properly Care for Your Trees This Fall

Fall is a season of a lot of changes for trees, so you will want to do whatever you can to help your trees navigate them.

Fall is officially here. The lower temperatures are starting to warn your trees that winter is indeed coming. Leaves will start changing very soon and after that, they will be gone. Fall is a season of a lot of changes for trees, so you will want to do whatever you can to help your trees navigate them. This maintenance is especially crucial for young trees, as their roots may not be as well established.

Fertilization

During the scorching heat of the summer months and the freezing cold of the winter months, your trees can lose vital nutrients. To help them recuperate some of these losses, you can apply a slow-release fertilizer. Not only will your trees get back some of what they lost, the fertilizer will continue to feed them throughout the winter. It will also help to fortify them against disease, insects, and the stresses of winter.

Hydration

Fall is the perfect time to make sure your trees get plenty of water before the winter freeze. While watering the ground around the base of a tree does give it water, it isn’t the most efficient. Subsurface watering is a far more efficient way to ensure that the water is penetrating well into the soil. Subsurface watering uses an injection probe to distribute water throughout the top 12 inches of the soil. This method works especially well for trees and shrubs without irrigation systems, newly planted trees, and trees that need temporary relief from the stresses of a drought.

Preparing for the Cold

Your trees are naturally programmed to prepare themselves for the winter, but pruning away any dead or compromised branches will really help. You may also need to tie up the base of any young trees to protect them from heavy snow.
