Famous Trees in Popular Culture

Trees don’t always get the recognition they so richly deserve, but sometimes they do.

We all know how great trees are. They increase oxygen, give us shade and shelter, and some of them even give us food. Plus, they look great even when they’re bare in the winter. Trees don’t always get the recognition they so richly deserve, but sometimes they do. Here are some of the famous trees you may have heard of.

Giving Tree (“The Giving Tree”)

Think back to your childhood. We’ve all read the story at some point. A boy grows up with a tree and although the boy turns out to be a rather selfish man, the tree still gives him all that it has. The tree ends up being the hero of the story.

Tree of Life (“The Lion King”, Walt Disney World)

In Disney’s “The Lion King”, the Tree of Life serves as the mystical Rafiki’s home. In Walt Disney World, the Tree of Life is the centerpiece of the park. Fashioned from a repurposed oil drum, the Tree of Life houses the 4-D attraction “It’s Tough to be a Bug” and beautifies the magical theme park with over 300 detailed animal carvings.

Grandmother Willow (“Pocahontas”)

Another famous Disney tree, Grandmother Willow acts as Pocahontas’ spirit guide and encourages her to listen to her heart.

Whomping Willow (“Harry Potter”)

The Whomping Willow was planted to hide the entrance to the secret pathway to the Shrieking Shack, where Remus Lupin would go to wait out his transformation into a werewolf. The Whomping Willow also teaches young Harry Potter and Ron Weasley a lesson when they decide to steal a flying car to get to school.

Treebeard (“The Lord of the Rings”)

“Tree? I am no tree, I am an Ent!” Treebeard exclaimed as an unsuspecting Hobbit dares to describe him as a tree. Treebeard is the leader of some of the oldest creatures in Middle Earth, the Ents. The Ents play a huge role in helping the heroes of the story reclaim the city of Isengard.

Groot (“Guardians of the Galaxy”)

One of the most recent, and most popular trees is Groot. The world first met Groot in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy comics. More recently, the giant tree Groot saves his guardian friends from a huge explosion. Groot reprises his Guardian’s role in Volume 2, in which he is much smaller because he had to re-grow from the explosion. Being little doesn’t stop him from having some killer dance moves though!
